When selling your car to a junkyard, the process may happen very fast, causing chaos. After you decide to junk your car, there are certain precautions to take. Before the tow truck shows up, remember these three important things in order to make the process go as smooth as possible.

Remove Personal Belongings

Cars tend to accumulate things over time. If you’ve had your car for a long time, there may be a few items in it that have been forgotten. Before the tow truck arrives to pick up the car, make sure that all of your personal belongings are removed.

Get Your Title

The most important thing you need in order to transfer ownership of a vehicle to a junkyard is a valid car title. If you don’t transfer ownership to the junkyard, you may still technically own the car, even though it’s been hauled away. If you have lost the title or don’t have one, you can complete a replace car title form at your local DMV.

Remove License Plates

When selling a car to a junkyard, the arrangements to pick up the car may be decided very quickly. In this rush you may forget to remove the license plates. In many states, you need to return license plates to the DMV before your registration can be cancelled. If the registration can’t be cancelled, you may not be able to cancel your car insurance policy either. Right after junking a car, make sure to call your insurance provider and cancel the insurance policy. You don’t want to have to be paying for insurance for a car that you no longer own!
